the lawmakers work out a deal before it's too late? angela mcglowan is a fox news analyst and michael meehan ceo of ben square communications, and advisor to senator john kerry, quite a week for him. angela, before i talk to you, is whether or not a deal could happen before it's too late, is that question moot? >> no, it isn't, jamie. a deal can happen and i believe that a deal will happen. i'm going to make a statement that president obama made about being optimistic. i'm optimistic that they can cut a deal for what they need to stop doing is this political theater. they are he' still playing politics and this negotiation debacle is an example of how washington d.c. is broken, but i don't fault boehner, i fault president obama and the tea party. >> jamie: mike, at this point politically theater or not, the question is sitting on the edge of their seat. why is it going this way? why is the president away? why is john boehner saying it's up to the president? how do you see this whole thing playing out? >> well, i think speaker boehner had a really tough day. if this were a parliamentary system th
, michael, i'm very much with you and with the folks you've been talking to in the sentiment to you and the president express. but i do want to avoid the puck is on both houses when you say democrats and republicans. at least the president has really come a long way. he gave the republicans a higher income tax threshold. he gave the chain cpi. he cut the debt ceiling in the deal. he gave them another trillion dollars in spending cuts. i think he's absolutely in the right when he says i have tried to compromise and i've been met with complete intransigence. >> an aide tells nbc news senator reid believes republicans should return to negotiating table and work with democrats that avoids the fiscal cliff all together. republicans should support passing a bill that extends tax cuts for families up to $250,000 and delays the so-called sequester while we negotiate additional policies next year. but the bottom line is moving forward will require cooperation from speaker boehner and senator mechanic connell. we hope they'll return from christmas ready to coop rate. >> well, you know, senato
or a little. >> thank you very much. >> speaking of abundance, up next, our friend michael schumer is back with all that's skeptical. we don't call him the resident skeptic for nothing. poor. >> from politics to the weather and stories beyond our understanding, 2012 has been a whirl wind tour to be sure. good news despite the dooms day calendar, but for how long. with us is our resident skeptic who is founding publisher is skeptic magazine and the skeptic society. thank you very much for being with us. we didn't -- the world didn't end. we are all still here. shouldn't these dooms day predictors be admitting that they were wrong right now. >> they will spin doctor it and rationalize their failed prophesy. one of the favorite books is when prophesy fails. he went to the mountain top of the cultists, waiting for the mother ship to see what would rap. when it didn't, they doubled down and increased the intensity of their belief and rationalized that they miscalculated the day and that in fact it was a spiritual change. been hearing the last two days. was that the mayan calendar thing was not

a perspective on how powerful the nra really is in the republican party because we had michael bloomberg, mayor of new york city, on "meet the press" last week. he said they are not that powerful. it is -- they are just -- ed rendell, former governor of pennsylvania. he got elected three times and said they are a piper tiger. >> i agree with the mayor. i said this for a very long time. the myth of the power of the nra is much greater than the actual power of the nra. you have to remember in -- talking about grover norquist and pledge or nra and -- their views, and -- you know, there are a lot of members of congress who are ideologically lined with the views of the organization. less about what the nra can do to them than they agree on most issues. they are getting that support. but if you go out and speak clearly to your constituents about what your views are on the issues and -- about revoking second amendment rights, really only talking about common sense reforms, i think most people would agree with you and most of your constituents, republican, sxind democrats would agree. >> we will be tal
there in terms of jobs. >> reporter: michael would know since he used to run the state's employment development agency. california's unemployment rate dropped to 9.8% in november from 10.1% in october. the numbers haven't been this good since 2007. he says those numbers though are somewhat misleading. he says there are one million californians who have part-time jobs who would actually prefer to be working full time. they are the ones helping to bring the unemployment rate down making the market look better than it really is. >> they are employed but some are working 5, 10, 15 hours a week. that's a different type of employment. >> reporter: he says it's not bad for everyone. silicon valley is hiring if you have a certain skill set. >> even here in san francisco, even here, it's doing better than virtually everywhere else. you have a bifurcated economy. if you are a skilled programmer, if you have those computer skills, it's the greatest place to be on the earth. but for the rest of
a march of one million moms in washington, d.c., we spoke with kaseen reid in atlanta, and michael bloomberg coming out and condemning the nra statement that came out on friday. what is the baby step towards a solution here? really, is there the political will to get things done? >> i used to work for chuck schumer and he will be active on this issue. the baby step is to start treating them like automobiles. let's require insurance before you can register and own them. then the market will determine risk. people with higher risk will not be able to get guns and they will not be able to afford guns. if we stop with that. we can move away from big be round ammunitions. you will get a hard time getting insurance for a weapon that can cause more damage. we could keep it away from the government. let the private sector regulate it on its own. >>. >> the nra proposal that was put out is not far-fetched. a lot of schools have resource officers that provide an extra level of security. but you have to understand that there's 100,000 public schools in the country. do the math. >> 5 billion.
were injured, in webs sister, new york, but i want to play what one of your own colleagues, michael nutter had to say about a plan like yours taking place in their area. take a listen. >> i guess, you know, out of last week's bizarre press statement, it wasn't a press conference, i guess mr. lapierre would then say that firefighters need to have armed guards go with them. i think it just shows that that was a completely dumb-[ bleep ] idea from the start. >> so he's talking there about the nra's reaction coming out saying the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with the gun. you're not a supporter of nra? >> not at all. >> but you're saying -- >> my job is to make it safe for the marlboro students in my jurisdiction. i don't make state law, i don't make federal law. i don't support the nra, i want to get rid of assault rifles. i think we have to close the loopholes on gun control. that being said, our students need to be safe where they learn. what newtown showed us was existing security is not safe the people that rely on safety in our commune and they do an excelle
and the likes of chuck schumer and jay rockefeller who owned an ar15 and michael moore and so many of these elites. now we have the demonization of people who suggest that maybe it should be local school districts and communities that take matters into their own hands. i pointed to a great example here in my own home state of colorado. in west cliff colorado where a local city councilman wrote me and told me about a sheriff's jut reach program to citizen volunteers who have been protecting their local school district for ten years now, getting training and working jointly with the sheriff's departments. i think that andrew cuomo maybe ought to talk to his brother, chris cuomo, who himself a member of that liberal democratic family has also endorsed the idea of armed guards in school districts. there are so many other things that do not infringe upon liberty or the second amendment that could go much further along towards preventing the next mass tragedy than what they are proposing now. >> and rob emmanuel's kids are protected by armed guards and the president jokingly said i ran s

are supposed to be preparing people for life. >> heather: we will did he bait witness alan colmes and michael gallagher. >> merry christmas. i'm not afraid to say it. >> heather: mike, pleat start with you. is this unnecessary legislation, what do you think? >> i was about to make alan happy, as i was driving over here, maybe this is bit legislative overreach. one of the most iconic christmas messages of our culture is miracle on 4th street where the judge -- on 34th street. there is the spirit of christmas alive and well and yes, there is a santa claus. if we can love the warm fuzzy message of "miracle on 34th street," why not judge come in and say let's say merry christmas without offending somebody. >> i've known mike for 20 years. have you made me happy? let me get this straight. you can't say merry christmas will. this is because of legislator's six-year-old son and decorated the holiday tree. think we have a lot more things to worry about on school campus is whether to say a word that is permitted. what the texas association of school board says. they have a document on its website that
